2/16/2002 -- Lynn Whelan (in yellow, facing camera) hugs roommate Edith Barnett in front of the charred Campus Walk Apartments in Greensboro where four died in an early Friday morning blaze. Both UNC-Greensboro students lived on the second floor. Whelan escaped unharmed, but Barnett suffered second-degree burns on one hand and both feet. Whelan had returned to her apartment to retrieve her car and to look for personal items. She had used the red rag to wipe off her soot-covered car keys and purse.
