3rd General News Byron Holland, New Bern Sun-Journal Ellen Westerman of the Wild Animal Rehabilitation Center of Craven County, NC, cradles one of two baby Great Horned Owls that were returned to their nest Wednesday, February 27, 2002 after falling nearly forty feet the day before from their nest at Fairfield Harbour Golf Club just outside New Bern, NC. WildARC, along with a crew from Clark Cable Services, returned the two-week-old owls to their tree via a bucket truck. Nesting season for Great Horned Owls is January through February, when the females lay between two to four eggs. They don't build their own nest, but instead use the nest of another bird or squirrel. To insure the safety of the two baby owls, WildARC replaced the nest with a wicker laundry basket secured to the tree. |
