David Chandler shares his dinner with his great nephew Ivan Valerio, 2, in Chandler's parents home in New Bern. Chandler has had back problems since 1997 that leave him in such pain that he must spend most of the day in bed. The 37-year-old, who has been denied disability benefits from Social Security, lives with his parents, Robert and Jo Ann Mercer, in their New Bern home. Chandler is scheduled is to have spinal fusion surgery in June.
