10/24/01: An orb weaver spider makes its way across its web on a tree along Waterton Leas Court in northeast Charlotte. Part of the Family Araneidae, genus Araneus, the largest genus of spiders in the world with over 1500 different species, according to Ed Menhinick, a professor at UNC Charlotte. When a prey gets caught in the web, web vibrations are transmitted to the retreat from a signal line attached to the hub, and the spider rushes out to capture it.
