Moments after Oscar Alcides Ramos Oviedo died, his mother mourns in a sweltering hospital room in the pediatric ward of the hospital in Leon, Nicaragua. Oscar died of a congenital heart defect, a defect that would have been easily corrected by surgery had he lived in the United States. His death occurred hours after being examined by Rene Herlong, a Duke University Pediatric Cardiologist, who was part of a medical mission to perform open heart surgery on children with defects such as Oscar's.
