1st Portrait John Simmons, Charlotte Observer 02/21/01: Kitty Hochman is reflected in the glass used in framing one of her pieces of artwork, a monoprint entitled "Elemental". Kitty Hochman, a 77-year-old woman, moved from New York City to Charlotte about a year ago when her health went bad. Kitty,a well-known artist in NYC, has a severe bone disease and she's also suffering from cancer. Kitty, who lives at Carmel Place Retirement Center, told afew people that she was an artist, but nobody really took it seriously--until she did a caricature-typedrawing of the former assistant managers of the center who were being transferred to another facility in January. The new manager, marilyn herman, asked if she could see some of Kitty's woek and Kitty took her to her apartment. the manager was stunned atthe collection of prints and paintings (according to Kitty she's mostly a print maker who usually does multi-media work). As a result the retirment center and Pope's Gallery are doing a show of Kitty's artwork, opening February 28, at the retirement center. (JOHN D. SIMMONS/ STAFF) |
