The American press has transformed from being watchdogs to lapdogs, Andrew Sullivan wrote in The Sunday Times, and it is no longer truly independent, or eager to offend, or skeptical of power, and so readers have learned to look elsewhere for their news.

Tiana Markova-Gold, Sarah Dohrmann Win Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize

The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University has awarded the twentieth Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize to photographer Tiana Markova-Gold and writer Sarah Dohrmann. The $20,000 award is given to encourage collaboration in documentary work in the tradition of acclaimed American photographer Dorothea Lange and writer and social scientist Paul Taylor.

NPPA Supports House Resolution Protecting Photographers From Police Interference
|
NPPA was pleased to see that U.S. Rep, Edolphus Towns of New York's 10th District has introduced House Congressional Resolution 298, which recognizes that the videotaping or photographing of police who are engaged in potentially abusive activity in a public place should not be prosecuted in state or federal courts. And now NPPA has asked Rep. Towns to take the next step and to change his Resolution into a Congressional Bill.

Andrea Bruce Leaves Washington Post To Freelance

Photojournalist Andrea Bruce has decided to leave The Washington Post to go freelance, and her photography will be represented by the VII Photo Agency's network, photography and multimedia director Michel duCille told the Post's staff today.

Freedom Of Photography: It's A Public Right
|
As The Washington Post reports, despite a First Amendment that protects the rights of citizens to take photographs in public places, the Constitution hasn't exactly filtered down to many of the police and security guards who continue to harass photographers, often citing authority they don't have and laws that don't exist.
